Celebrating Women

The team at GEMS Education School Support Centre held an event to honour women and show their appreciation to those who inspire them.

On Thursday, 7 March, a purple haze fell over the GEMS Education School Support Centre as team members donned the colour in support of International Women’s Day while they enjoyed a one-hour female empowerment event.

Inspirational words were shared by Dino Varkey, CEO; Elmarie Venter, Chief Enrolment, Marketing, Communications and Corporate Relations; Rupert Brown, Chief People Officer; and Alexandra Dagher, Senior Vice President, Legal. International Women’s Day celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity and this year’s theme was #BalanceforBetter because society is in an interesting point in time where the world expects balance. The race is on globally for the genderbalanced boardroom, government, employees, wealth, and opportunities.

Colleagues were asked to nominate an inspirational woman in GEMS Education. We asked some of those nominated to define what being an inspirational woman means to them.

The most important thing for me is to see the glass as half full. It is so important to focus on the positive and remove negativity from your life. Don’t try to be inspiring, just do the best you can at everything you do, whether it be in your personal or professional life. Live your life with passion and most importantly, be true to yourself. — Joanna Andrews, Vice President – Communications

Becoming an inspirational woman starts by loving yourself and your uniqueness. It begins by embracing and appreciating your own true persona, your own beauty, and by enthusiastically developing yourself. Most importantly, you also must feel complete by yourself. By fully loving yourself completely, you feel loved, fulfilled, whole and joyful inside. You become the radiant, soulconnected, passionate, empowered and most inspiring woman you are capable of being. — Maria Buenaseda, Assistant Manager – Business Analytics

Work with pride, with confidence, with integrity, and follow the lead of other empowering women. While the world might be a competitive place, women are better and stronger together so connect with your peers and great outcomes can be achieved. — Shalini Wijeratna, HR Business Partner – Varkey Group & GEMS Global
